Rankings - Top 10: Aflac All-American Game (Summer 2009)

Aflac All-American Game
December 10, 2009

As with our Under Armour coverage, while we gave quick hits on our Top 15 from this year’s incarnation of the Aflac All-America Game, for ranking purposes we will not be going past a Top 10, as there isn't quite enough to distinguish the players if we are limiting evaluations to just this event's performances. As with our previous Rankings, we’re including a “Note” with each player highlighting some aspect of their performance as relates to this event:

  1. Jameson Taillon, RHP, The Woodlands HS (Texas): Again, easily the best arm on display; struck out four over two innings and was dominant with mid-90s fastball and hard, 2-plane power curve
  2. DeAndre Smelter, RHP, Tattnall Square Academy (Ga.): Three strikouts and one walk over an inning pitched; showed nasty low- to mid-80s splitter, sat low-90s with his 4-seam and flashing a potential above-average breaking ball
  3. Dylan Covey, RHP, Maranatha HS (Calif.): Perfect inning pitched, striking out two; low-90s fastball comes on a tough downward plane and showed one of the better power curves in the draft class, effective both in and out of the zone
  4. Tony Wolters, SS/2B, Rancho Buena Vista HS (Calif.): Up-the-middle actions in the field and showed ability to square-up with wood against impressive arms; good aggressiveness on basepaths and high intensity player, overall
  5. Robert Aviles, RHP, Suffern HS (N.Y.): Had one of the best change-ups in the prep ranks on display; also showed a hard downer curve and a solid 88-91 mph fastball
  6. AJ Cole, RHP, Oviedo HS (Fla.): Hit mid-90s with fastball and worked curve all around the strikezone; flawless inning if not for having a hard hit ball to center slightly overrun by Chevy Clarke
  7. Brian Ragira, OF, James Martin HS (Texas): Showed quick hands and in-game pop, doubling off of a low-90s Cole fastball up in the zone; hard contact and ability to hit the ball where pitched (line out to left on fastball in, double to center on fastball middle-up and hard one-hop to second on fastball away)
  8. Kaleb Cowart, RHP/SS/3B, Cook County HS (Ga.): Perhaps a little room for more velocity with an extended stride; both low- to mid-90s fastball and low-70s breaking ball were swing-and-miss pitches
  9. Bryce Harper, C, Coll. of Sou. Nevada: Disappointing game at the plate isn't enough to offset incredible display of arm strength and soft hands behind the plate, as well as impressive raw power in runner-up showing in the homerun derby
  10. Marcus Littlewood, SS, Pineview HS (Utah): Worked a couple of walks and showed the best combination of range/hands/arm at shortstop
