Top 5: Perfect Game Sunshine NE Showcase
November 22, 2009
By Nick James

The Perfect Game 2009 Sunshine Northeast Showcase was well attended by coaches from a number of northeast programs, as well as a few big-name programs from outside the region. The talent on the field was a bit uneven, and while a good chunk of the players should get a shot at college ball, the number of players currently projecting to the pro ranks was limited. Here are my Top 5 performers from the event -- a “Note” is included with each player, highlighting some aspect of his performance as relates to this event. “(2011)” designation indicates the player isn’t draft eligible until 2011:

  1. Robert DeCosmo, RHP, Cathedral HS (MA) (2011): Already sitting upper-80s with his fastball; could see velocity spike as he continues to develop and to firm-up his physique. Mid-70s downer curve with good arm action. Throws with some effort. Workhouse build with potential power arsenal -- could be impact arm in '11 draft class.
  2. TJ Pecoraro, RHP/SS, Half Hollow Hills West HS (NY): Vanderbilt commit with slight frame (6-0/160) but plus arm speed producing upper-80s to low-90s velocity with his fastball and good life. Adds a mid-70s slider with tilt that flashes above-average late bite and a decent feel for a rudimentary low-70s change-up with good arm speed and some depth.
  3. TJ Jann, RHP/SS, Westford HS (MA): Nice frame (6-4/190) with mid- to upper-80s velocity that should be upper-80s to low-90s once his mechanics clean-up some -- perhaps more as he fills-in. Mixes in a mid- to upper-70s breaking ball with some depth and shows solid control. Decent actions in the field with strong arm but projects better off the mound right now. Penn State commit.
  4. Ryan Pennell, LHP, Rye Neck HS (NY): Popped on many radars after 21-strikeout no-hitter this past spring. Elon commit is currently upper-80s with a straightish fastball and low-70s with soft curveball. Projection is there for a jump in stuff and strength moving towards draft day (6-4/190 with good athleticism). If everything hasn't clicked by then, solid follow for 2013 class.
  5. Christopher Gili, SS/OF, Eastport South Manor HS (NY): Athletic actions in the field and good footwork around the bag. Compact swing with good leverage at contact -- shows surprising pop with wood for size (6-0/160). Solid approach at the plate and ability to square-up with some frequency. Wasn't particularly tested by pitching, but good showing on weekend. Could develop into pro prospect at Austin Peay.
