While we gave quick hits on our Top 15 from this year’s incarnation of the Under Armour All-America Game (powered by Baseball Factory), for ranking purposes
I’m not sure enough weight can be given to the weekend’s performances to go past a Top 10. It might be a bit of
a copout, but there just wasn’t enough to distinguish past that point, for me, if we’re only taking the event
into account. So, here’s our Top 10 from the UA All-America Game -- depending on feedback, we can expand this list if
the readers think it’s worth it. As with our Team USA Rankings, we’re including a “Note” with each
player highlighting some aspect of their performance as relates to this event:
- Jameson Taillon, RHP, The Woodlands HS (TX): Struck
out all three batters faced and sat comfortably low- to mid-90s with his fastball -- MVP honors for Team One team
- AJ Cole, RHP, Oviedo HS (FL): Good velocity, lots
of projection in frame and stuff -- even without his best breaking ball Cole got excellent spin, just coming around it some
- Nick Castellanos, 3B, Archbishop McCarthy HS (FL):
HR Derby winner and most consistent power in derby by wide margin, 4-4 day with three 2B and one 3B and MVP honors for Baseball
Factory team
- Karsten
Whitson, RHP, Chipley HS (FL): Good velocity and downward plane on fastball out of high arm slot -- sat low-90s with
fastball
- Deshaun Dixon,
LHP/OF, Terry HS (MS): Showed solid command of secondary stuff down in the zone and deception in his delivery
- DeAndre Smelter, RHP, Tattnall Square Academy (GA):
Good sweeping action on his slider and solid 2-seam life out of low 3/4 slot
- Kevin Gausman, RHP, Grandview HS (CO): Long frame with good body
control and extension towards home, showed ability to repeat mechanics -- solid showing with room for growth in frame and
stuff
- Austin Wilson,
OF, Harvard Westlake HS (CA): “Best body” among position players and showed most impressive combination
of current skill set and projection among the same -- plus raw power/arm with solid speed
- Yordy Cabrera, SS/2B, Lakeland HS (FL): Showed
flashes of above-average pop for middle-infielder and solid hands in the field
- Reggie Golden, OF, Wetumpka HS (AL): Longest hit ball in the
game, just missing clearing the left field bleachers at Wrigley by a matter of feet -- improved approach at plate could shoot
him up draft boards
